quicktime virtual reality is a type of file format supported by apple's quicktime. quicktime vr enables viewers to explore virtual worlds using nothing more than a computer and mouse — no cumbersome goggles, headsets or gloves required. the planar version of these pictures is also used for 3d animaton - specially sphere mapping. sphere mapping is an implementation of environment mapping. this method of mapping is a computer graphics technique which uses a two-dimensional image containing the incident illumination from every direction at a given point. reflection created in this way is an efficient method of simulating a complex mirroring surface. the texture is used for storing the image of the environment the rendered object resides.
